How overwhelming has the Prior Lake girls tennis team been in its 6-0 start?

The No. 6-ranked Lakers have won 39 of 42 matches, including all 18 in doubles. The team’s latest triumph is a 7-0 win at Holy Angels (a Section 3AA foe) in a non-conference match Sept. 4.

“We tried some different things with our lineup and sat some starters to get more girls in the lineup and those girls really played well and came through,” said Lakers coach Kris Schneider. “It is so nice to have such depth and know that any of my girls can go out and win and play well.

“(Ninth-grader) Chloe Hall also did a great job against a tough opponent, who she lost to last year,” added Schneider. “Overall it was a very good match for us, considering it was the first day of school and that can make it difficult to focus.”

Hall won in three sets at No. 1 singles (6-3, 4-6, 6-1). Eighth-grader Savanna Crowell rolled in straight sets at the No. 2 spot (6-1, 6-1), as did seventh-grader Taylor Jackson at No. 3 (6-0, 6-1) and junior Emily Gulstad at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2).

In doubles, juniors Sarah Henderson and Nikki Henderson teamed up at the No. 1 spot and cruised to an easy win (6-3, 6-1), while junior Abby Broadwell and sophomore Alison Wagner won at No. 2 (6-0, 6-4) and ninth-grader Sydney Soefker and junior Hannah Lund didn’t lose a game in winning at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0).

Prior Lake returns to South Suburban Conference action Thursday, Sept. 6 at Lakeville North at 4 p.m. The Lakers are 3-0 in league play.

Prior Lake is also playing in the Rochester Mayo Invitational Saturday, Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. The field is loaded with qualify teams, including the No. 1 Edina, No. 2 Minnetonka, No. 3 host Spartans, No. 5 Wayzata, No. 7 Mounds View, Rochester Lourdes and Centennial.
