The Prior Lake boys lacrosse team rallied for a big win in its season opener April 15.

Quiet for most of the game, junior Cullen Sowder made his presence felt in the final 3:57 in leading the No. 10-ranked Lakers to a 7-6 win at No. 6 Blake.

Sowder tied the game with 3:57 left to play and put the Lakers up a goal with 1:49 left remaining. Sophomore Ben Ward also had a big game for Prior Lake with three goals, including scoring with 6:55 left to pull his team to within a goal.

“Cullen’s our emotional leader,” Prior Lake coach Chris Fleck told the Minnesota Lacrosse Hub. “He’s always ready to go. He wants the ball in the stick.”

Blake took a 6-4 lead 2:13 into the fourth quarter. The game was 3-3 at the half and 2-2 after the first quarter.

Senior Sean Carlson and junior Taylor Kropp each had a goal and an assist for the Lakers. Senior goalie Aaron Wiederheoft finished with six saves in goal.

Prior Lake is back on the field April 19 at Minneapolis Washburn in a non-league game at 7 p.m. The Lakers will open the South Suburban Conference season April 22 at home versus Lakeville North at 7:30 p.m.

The Lakers are home to Lakeville South April 25 at 7 p.m.

The SSC features five ranked teams, including No. 2 Eastview, No. 3 Rosemount, No. 4 Bloomington Jefferson and No. 5 Eagan, along with the Lakers. All five of those teams also reside in Section 3.

So the Blake game is just the start of a grueling schedule for the Lakers.
