The Prior Lake softball team has seven losses on the season, but it is still ranked in the state's top 10.

The No. 9-ranked Lakers, last year's Class 3A state runner-up, has the potential to defend their Section 2AAA crown. There's no doubt about that and potential is likely why the team is still ranked.

But the Lakers are going to have to be more consistent to make another long playoff run. Prior Lake lost 15-5 in five innings at No. 4 Bloomington Jefferson May 12 and followed with a 13-1 win at Apple Valley the next day.

The Lakers (9-7 overall, 5-6 in the SSC) play two games May 14. They are at Bloomington Kennedy in league play at 3 p.m. and then head to No. 5 Forest Lake for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.

Prior Lake is at Waconia (a section foe) May 15 at 4:30 p.m. and ends the regular season May 16 at home versus Rosemount at 4:15 p.m.

In beating Apple Valley, senior Kara Lattery had a huge day at the plate. She finished 3 for 4 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Through 16 games, she was leading the team in homers (seven), RBIs (25), while hitting .509.

The Lakers scored six runs in the second inning to lead 7-0. Sophomore Caitlin Stone got the win with a complete game, allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts.

Junior Shaye Barton finished 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Senior Katie Sickmann was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while senior Shannon Borchardt was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Angela McBeain and junior Deanna Wibbens each had RBIs.

In the loss to Jefferson, Prior Lake gave up 12 runs in the second inning.

McBeain took the loss going 1 1/3 innings, allowing 11 runs (nine earned) while walking seven. Wibbens pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four runs (three earned).

Lattery finished 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs. Barton was 2 for 3 with a solo home run. Stone also had an RBI.
