Kasie Vollmer took her talents to the national level July 5-6.

The 2014 Prior Lake High School graduate competed in the USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior Outdoor Championships on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene.

Fans were treated to a glimpse of the future of USATF as the best athletes under the age of 20, including high school standouts and the nation’s most promising college freshmen, faced off at Historic Hayward Field.

The championships also served as a qualifier for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships. The top performers qualified to be part of the American team that will have the unique opportunity to return to Eugene July 22-27. The 2014 edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships marks the first time the event has ever been held in the United States.

Meanwhile, Vollmer ended up ninth in the discus with a toss of 149-11. The winning toss was from Valarie Allman of Stanford (188-06), while Katelyn Daniels of Michigan State was second (174-09) and Julie Lange of Medina Valley High School in Texas was third (164-06).

Vollmer capped off Prior Lake career June 6 winning the discus title at the Class AA state meet with a toss of 152-10. She holds the school record with a toss of 160-10, which was her winning mark in the Section 3AA meet to qualify for state for a fourth year in a row.

Vollmer also became the third Laker to win an individual state title in the past 10 seasons.

As a junior, Vollmer was second in the discus at state. She was fourth in 2012 and 15th in 2009. She also competed in the state shot put this past spring for a second straight year and ended up fourth with a toss of 41-7. That was a foot off her school record. As a junior, Vollmer was 12th in that event.

Vollmer will compete at the Division I level next year at South Dakota State University.
