TJ Larson is getting a shot in professional baseball.

The 2011 Prior Lake High School graduate signed with the Frontier League's Windy City Thunderbolts June 25. The Frontier League is an independent pro organization based out of Sauget, Ill. that has been around since 1993.

The Windy City franchise is one of 14 and is based out of Crestwood, Ill.

Larson was a standout in his Laker days - a three-sport athlete, who was a three-year starter at quarterback for the football team and a guard on the basketball team.

In baseball, Larson was a four-year letterwinner. The right-handed pitcher participated in the Lion's All-Star Series in his senior year, which features the top seniors in the state. Larson had a dominant senior season, going 8-2 with a 2.00 earned-run average.

Larson followed his career with the Lakers pitching at the Division II level at Minnesota State University in Mankato. He helped the Mavericks program to the Division II National Championships in his last three seasons.

This past spring, the Mavericks finished runner-up at nationals. Larson was 5-3 in nine starts and made 13 appearances. He had a 3.27 earned-run average with 62 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings of work. At nationals, he earned a win for his team over Souther Indiana, striking out three in seven innings of work.

As a junior, Larson was 6-0 with a 3.63 earned-run average. He held hitters to a .198 average, striking out 37 in 34 2/3 innings or work. He struck out two and one run in three innings in the national championships.

In his sophomore year, Larson was 2-0 with a 2.65 earned-run average in 13 appearances. He pitched 3 2/3 innings in the national tourney, allowing a run, while fanning two.

As a freshman, Larson made eight appearances (five starts) and had a 2-1 record with a 3.04 earned-run average.

Larson has also played with the Prior Lake Jays the last three summers. The Jays are a Class B team in the Minnesota Baseball Association. Larson has been one of the team's top starters.

Meanwhile, the Frontier League has had some players reach Major League Baseball. In 2000, Brian Tollberg made his debut with the San Diego Padres after beginning his career with Chillicothe Paints out of Ohio in the Frontier League in 1993. The Paints are now part of the Prospect League.

Also in 2000, Morgan Burkhart made his MLB debut with the Boston Red Sox. He played for the Richmond Roosters on the Frontier League. Burkhart managed the Thunderbolts in 2012.
