The Prior Lake girls tennis team opened the season with a strong win.

The Lakers swept all three doubles matches Aug. 23 in beating one of the top teams from South Dakota, O'Gorman, with a 4-2 victory. The No. 1 singles matches was in the third set, but rain didn't allow it to finish.

Fifth-ranked Prior Lake was in the Edina scrimmage the day before and faced some top competition in preparing for its opener. Edina has won the last 17 Class AA state titles.

"It was flighted (scrimmage) - just pro sets, so it didn't count as a match," said Lakers coach Kris Schneider.  "We still did very well at it. And it was good practice for the girls.

"We played much better against O'Gorman," added Schneider. "I think that was because of the competition we got the day before. O'Gorman is a very solid team and we really stepped up and played well. Our effort and attitude in every match was outstanding."

Top-ranked Edina beat O'Gorman 5-2 Aug. 21. Prior Lake didn't lose a set in doubles in beating O'Gorman.

Winning at No. 1 were senior Dani Keller and junior Chloe Hall (6-2, 6-1). Senior Alison Wagner and junior Sydney Soeffker won at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2), while senior Erin Swanson and eighth-grader Charlotte Bowles won at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0).

The Lakers' win in singles came at No. 3 with ninth-grader Taylor Jackson winning in straight sets (7-5, 6-1).

Sophomore Savanna Crowell played No. 1 singles for Prior Lake. She won the first set 6-1 and fell 7-5 in the second set. The third one was 5-5 in a super tiebreaker before the rains came.

Junior Grayce Peterson fell at No. 2 singles for the Lakers, losing (6-3, 6-2), while junior Kayli French fell at No. 4 (6-0, 6-4).

Prior Lake is back on the court Aug. 25 at home versus No. 4 Wayzata at 4 p.m. The Lakers open the South Suburban Conference season the next day at Eagan at 3:30 p.m.
