The Prior Lake girls soccer team opened the season with a pair of shutouts.

Senior Emily Peterson tallied three goals in two games as the No. 7-ranked Lakers won both of their games in their annual Katie Drentlaw Invitational play at the Savage Dome - 2-0 over Hill-Murray Aug. 22 and 2-0 over Cretin-Derham Hall the next day.

Peterson scored both of the goals in the win over Cretin-Derham Hall, while senior Jenna Stock earned both shutouts in goal.

Senior Maggie Ruelle had a goal in the win over Hill-Murray, while senior Kaija Ornes picked up a pair of assists.

The Lakers will get their first big test Aug. 26 on the road at Edina at the Edina Community Center at 6:30 p.m. The Hornets are a Section 2AA foe and opened their season with a 3-1 win over No. 4Burnsville.

So it's a big early season game for the Lakers, which most likely will have Section 2AA seed implications. Last year, Prior Lake was the No. 1 seed in the section, despite losing an early season game at Edina.

The Lakers lost in the section final last fall, falling 1-0 to Eden Prairie. It was the second straight year Prior Lake's season ended with a 1-0 loss to the Eagles.

Prior Lake's only two losses last year were to the two Lake Conference teams.

The Lakers will open the South Suburban Conference season Sept. 2 on the road at Lakeville South at 7:30 p.m. Prior Lake is home Sept. 4 to take on Farmington at 5:30 p.m.

The Tigers are new to the SSC this season, along with Shakopee. Both come over from the now-defunct Missota Conference, while the two Bloomington teams, Jefferson and Kennedy, moved to the new Metro West Conference.

The Lakers will play at Jefferson Sept. 6 at 3p.m. The Jaguars are still a Section 2AA foe.
