Lakers add to the state total

The Prior Lake girls tennis team added to its state total Oct. 14.

The Lakers qualified both a doubles team and a singles player for the Class AA state tournament. Prior Lake already advanced as a team, winning the section crown Oct. 9 for a third straight year with a 5-2 win over Eastview.

Juniors Chloe Hall and Grayce Petersen won the section doubles crown as the No. 2 seed, while sophomore Savanna Crowell was runner-up in singles while also seeded second.

The Class AA state team tournament is Oct. 21-22 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. The Lakers earned the No. 2 seed will face Princeton in the quarterfinals Oct. 21 at noon.

Other quarterfinal pairings: top-seeded Edina versus Mounds View, third-seeded Minnetonka versus St. Cloud Tech and fourth-seeded Mahtomedi versus fifth-seeded Rochester Mayo.

The semifinals are Oct. 22 at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. while the title match is at 4 p.m.

Prior Lake (14-1 overall) was fourth at state last year and a program-best third in 2012.

Meanwhile, Hall and Petersen swept their way the doubles title, including a 6-4, 6-4 win over top-seeded Jordan Kopfer and Melissa Barry of Eastview in the final.

Hall and Petersen had a bye in the first round and rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Eleanor Goblirsch and Bria Carlson of Holy Angels in the second round. In the quarterfinals. Hall and Petersen cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 over seventh-seeded Christina Lu and Mackenzie Novak of Eastview.

In the semifinals, Hall and Peterson earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over third-seeded Mia Davis and Natalie Wijesinghe of Apple Valley.

Hall has played in the state doubles tournament the last two seasons with Crowell. The two won the consolation title last year and went 1-1 together in 2012.

For Crowell at sections, she went 3-0 on her way to the title match before falling in three sets in the finals (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) to top-seeded Malina Wijesinghe of Apple Valley.

Crowell had a bye in the first round, before earning wins over Maria Graves of Burnsville in the semifinals (6-1, 6-0), Gabby Dougan of Apple Valley in the quarterfinals (6-0, 6-0) and third-seeded Sam Nichols of Eagan in the semifinals (6-0, 6-1).

Meanwhile, senior Dani Keller and junior Sydney Soeffker teamed up in doubles for the Lakers and finished fourth. Seeded fourth, they lost to Kopfer and Barry in the semifinals 6-4, 6-2, before losing the third-place to Mia Davis and Natalie Wijesinghe of Apple Valley (6-3, 7-5).

Keller and Soeffker won their first three matches, beating Sophie Webster and Reame Cheatam of Richfield in the first round (6-0, 6-0), Gretchen McDonald and Abby Kohagen of Rosemount (6-0, 6-1) in the second round and fifth-seeded Anusha Arcalgud and Linde Schaffer of Eagan in the quartefinals (6-1, 6-1).

Ninth-grader Taylor Jackson competed in singles for the Lakers and went 2-1. Seeded eighth, she beat Berl Larson of Bloomington Jefferson (6-0, 6-0) and Lauren Gunderson of Richfield in the first two rounds, before falling to Wijesinghe in the quarterfinals (6-1, 6-0).
