Riding high from its runner-up finish in the Class AA state girls tennis tournament, Prior Lake was hoping for a little more in individual play.

But instead, the Lakers settled for two splits.

Sophomore Savanna Crowell was representing the Lakers in the singles tournament, while juniors Grayce Petersen and Chloe Hall were in doubles Oct. 23 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Both won their first-round matches, but couldn't get out of the quarterfinals, which ended their run.

At state, if a singles player or doubles team wins in the first round and loses in the quarterfinals, their tournament is over. However, if a player or doubles team loses in the first round, they go to the consolation bracket where they can potentially play three more matches.

Last year, Crowell and Hall lost in the first round of doubles play and went on to win the consolation title to finish fifth. The two also played in the 2012 doubles tourney and went 1-1.

Petersen was making her first-ever state appearance in individual play and her and Hall nearly made it to the semifinals. They lost a tough three-set match in the quarterfinals to Rochester Mayo seniors Kylie Boyer and Kate Rosenow (6-7, 6-2, 6-0).

In the first round, Hall and Petersen won in straight sets over Finja Mahl and Alexis Konecne of Bemidji (6-4, 7-5).

Meanwhile, Crowell won a tough three-set battle in the first round over Olivia Paradise of Mahtomedi (2-6, 6-3, 7-6), before falling in the quarterfinals to Minnetonka's Isabella Lambert (6-4, 6-3).

Prior Lake has never had a singles or doubles champion in its history. And this year's runner-up team finish was a program-best for the Lakers.

Perennial power Edina beat Prior Lake 6-1 in the title match. It was the Hornets' 18th straight state crown.

The Lakers have been one of the state's elite programs the last three years under fourth-year coach Kris Schneider, finishing third at state in 2012 and taking fourth last year.

Prior Lake has also dominated the South Suburban Conference, winning the last four titles. The Lakers (16-2 overall, 9-0 in the SSC this season) will head into next fall on a 35-match unbeaten streak in league play.

Crowell, Petersen and Hall will again be a big part of the Lakers next fall, along with six other underclassmen - juniors Sydney Soeffker and Kayli French, ninth-graders Taylor Jackson and Lindsey Henderson, eighth-grader Charlotte Bowels and seventh-grader Nic Keller.

The Lakers will have to replace three seniors - Dani Keller, Alison Wagner and Erin Swanson. Keller was a six-year letterwinner. She played in the state singles tournament as a sophomore. Wagner has also been a big part of the Lakers' doubles teams the last three years.

But with Prior Lake's top-four singles players - Crowell, Hall, Jackson and Petersen - expected back the Lakers will once again be the favorites in the SSC and in Section 3AA.
