Four Lakers are selected all-state: Ornes, Peterson, Fenske, Gaffney

The Prior Lake boys and girls soccer teams fell short of qualifying for their respective Class AA state tournaments.

But the Lakers' talents were still recognized.

Senior Kyle Fenske was named first-team, all-state by the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association, while senior Austin Gaffney was named to the second-team.

On the girls side, seniors Kaija Ornes and Emily Peterson represented Prior Lake on the first-team, all-state squad.

There were 24 players named to each of the first and second teams.

For Ornes, it was her second straight season being selected. She was also a finalist for the Ms. Soccer Award, which was won by Eden Prairie senior April Bockin.

For Fenske, Gaffney and Peterson, it was their first-ever all-state honor. East Ridge's Connor Stevens won the Mr. Soccer award.

Fenske led the Lakers' defense this fall, while Gaffney sparked the offense as the team won the South Suburban Conference title with an 8-1 mark. Prior Lake had seven shutout wins and all of them came in league play.

The Lakers finished 10-6-1 overall, losing 3-2 in overtime to Bloomington Jefferson in the Section 2AA semifinals.

Meanwhile, the Prior Lake girls lost 1-0 to Eden Prairie in the Section 2AA title game for a second straight year, finishing with a 13-5-1 mark (5-3-1 in the SSC).

Ornes led the Lakers in assists with 14, adding seven goals. Peterson finished with 13 goals and five assists.

Ornes and Peterson were two of five SSC players named first-team all-state, joining Eagan's Jade King and Taylor Keneally and Eastview's Mia Gorgi.

Fenske was one just two SSC players named to the first team, along with Eastview's Kyle Lamott.

It's the second straight year the Prior Lake boys had an all-state selection with forward Jhony Blanco getting the honor last year.

On boys second-team, all-state squad, there were two other SSC players honored along with Gaffney, while there were four girls players from the SSC on the second team.
