Lakers Cruise in final SSC dual

Spinner, Shimek lead the way in 96-82 win at Farmington

The Prior Lake girls swimming team finished another successful South Suburban Conference dual season Oct. 21.

The Lakers won eight of 12 events in a 96-82 win at Farmington. Junior Alex Spinner and ninth-grader Madison Shimek each won two individual events to lead the way.

Prior Lake finished 7-2 in SSC duals (7-3 overall) and now will turn its attention to the Section 2AA meet. The prelims are set for Nov. 5, while the finals are Nov. 7 and both days are held at Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake. The diving is Nov. 6 at the same venue.

Teams in the section field include No. 9-ranked Lakeville North, Chanhassen, Lakeville South, Burnsville, Apple Valley, Bloomington Jefferson and Shakopee.

Prior Lake is the defending section champion and has won the title three of the last four years.

Meanwhile, in the win over Farmington, Spinner won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:15.08 and the 100 breaststroke (1:11.60). Shimek captured the 500 freestyle (5:26.72) and the 200 freestyle (2:01.18).

Junior Jamie Kimble won the diving for the Lakers with a score of 207.60, while junior Lauren Harris was tops in the 100 backstroke (1:00.73).

The Lakers' 200 medley relay team of Spinner, Shimek, Harris and eighth-grader Skylar Welle was a winner (1:54.44), as was the 400 freestyle team of Shimek, Harris, Spinner and junior Maggie Andersen (4:26.57).

The Lakers' 200 freestyle team of Andersen, sophomores Elizabeth Heile and Claudia Mahoney and junior Sally Stark was second (1:46.91).

Individual runner-up finishes went to: Welle in the 200 individual medley (2:20.19), Harris in the 50 freestyle (25.42), Heile in the 100 butterfly (1:08.93) and Andersen in the 100 freestyle (58.25).

This year's Class AA state meet is set for Nov. 12-14 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Lakers were 14th in the team standings last year. Top-ranked Wayzata is the defending champion and the favorite again this season.

The Lakers have five swimmers back who competed at state last year - Harris, Shimek, Spinner, Kimble and junior Brooke Manfred.

Kimble and Manfred competed in diving taking 24th and 30th, respectively.

Harris and Shimek competed in two individual events. Harris was 13th in the 100 butterfly and 18th in the 100 backstroke. Shimek was 12th in the 100 freestyle and 26th in the 200 freestyle. Spinner ended up 17th in the 100 butterfly.

Harris was also part of the 200 medley relay that finished ninth and the 400 freestyle relay that was 14th. Shimek was also on the 400 freestyle relay and was part of the 200 freestyle relay that finished 10th.

Prior Lake's best state team finish since becoming a Class 2A program is ninth in 2011.

Other team finishes for the Lakers since 2004: 11th (2010), 15th (2009), 20th (2008), 27th (2006 and 2007), 15th (2005), 25th (2012) and 26th (2004).
