The Prior Lake gymnastics team is hoping the best is still to come.

The Lakers have had some injury woes in the early season, but sophomore Kailey Dobransky has been healthy and she's led the way for the team.

Dobransky won the all-around in the Lakers' first two South Suburban Conference meets, including at Lakeville South Dec. 16. She scored a 34.625 as Prior Lake finished with 125.225 as a team and lost to the Cougars (130.550).

The Lakers also had their own eight-team invite Dec. 13 and finished fifth overall with a score of 126.65. Dobransky was second in the all-around with a total of 34.85.

"Unfortunately we have been hindered with injury and illness, but the girls really stepped up and preformed when called up to varsity at the last minute," said Lakers co-interim coach Donna Weber.

It's a long season, so the key for the Lakers is to be 100 percent come February, so they can challenge for the Section 2AA title. Prior Lake was fourth in the section last year after winning the crown in 2012, finishing a program-best seventh at state.

The Lakers are not back in action until Jan. 3 at the New Prague Invitational at 11 a.m. The field includes Edina, Mankato West, Mankato East, Waseca, Stewartville, Pine Island and Byron.

Prior Lake's first SSC competition in 2015 is a home meet versus Apple Valley Jan. 6 at 6 p.m.

"We will focus on a hard winter break, training to get some of our new and advanced skills into the girls' routines," said Weber.

At the Lakers' own invite, Dobransky won the vault with a score of 9.25. She was third on both the uneven bars (8.8) and balance beam (8.4).

Sophomore Rachel Grosklags was 10th in the all-around (32.7) with her best finish on the vault (7th, 8.95). She was also 12th on the uneven bars (7.9). Junior Tarra Willox was 11th in the all-around (32.55), taking 10th on the vault (8.7), sixth on the beam (8.25) and 13th on the floor exercise (8.8).

The Lakers are scheduled to compete in the Lakeville North Invitational Jan. 10 at 8:30 a.m., before facing Rosemount in an SSC meet on the road Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.

Prior Lake returns home Jan. 20 for a conference meet versus Eastview at 6 p.m.

This year's Section 2AA meet is Feb. 13 at Chanhassen High School. The Class 2A state team competition is Feb. 20, while the individual meet is Feb. 21. Both days are the Sports Pavilion at the University of Minnesota.

Roseville Area is the defending state team champion.

Dobransky competed in the all-around at state last year, finishing 17th with a score of 36.925. She also finished 15th on the balance beam (9.225) and 25th on the uneven bars (8.925).
