The Prior Lake dance team was in the middle in a South Suburban Conference high kick competition Dec. 16.

The Lakers finished with 20 ranking points to finish fifth. Host Eastview won the title with four ranking points, followed by Lakeville South (8), Lakeville North (13) and Burnsville (15).

The rest of the field included Eagan (24.5), Shakopee (27.5), Farmington (34), Apple Valley (35) and Farmington (39).

The SSC Championships are set for Dec. 20 and the Lakers will be the host, starting at 11 a.m.

In the first high kick meet Dec. 2, Prior Lake, led by its senior captains Casey McNally, Peyton Faber and Kacie Lein, was also fifth. It the two SSC jazz funk competitions, (Dec. 9 and Nov. 25), the Lakers were third in both.

The Lakers have qualified for the Class 3A state meet in jazz funk the last two years, the only two berths in the program history. The team has never made state in high kick.

The top-three finishers in both dances make state from the Section 1AAA competition, which is Feb. 7 at Bloomington Kennedy. The Lakers were third in jazz funk in the last two section competitions.

Last year, the Lakers were 10th at state in jazz funk, improving one spot from the year before.

Eastview is the defending state champion in both high kick and jazz funk. The perennial power Lightning have won the last four state titles in high kick.
