Alex Hart is headed southwest to play Division I football.

The Prior Lake senior has recently verbally committed to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. The Lobos compete in the Mountain West Conference.

Hart, a 6-foot-3-inch, 220-pound linebacker had multiple schools vying for his services. It's been reported that Wyoming, Toledo and North Dakota State were also interested.

Hart was a three-year starter on the Lakers' defense. He was named to the 2014 Associated Press first-team, all-state defensive squad. He was also one of 10 finalists for Mr. Football, the second straight year that Prior Lake has had a player up for that top award.

Blake Weber was finalist last year. Weber and Hart are the only two Lakers to ever be nominated for the award, which began in 2004.

Hart was also a two-way player for the Lakers. At linebacker, he finished this past year with 82 tackles, including 15 for a loss, along with eight sacks.

On offense, Hart finished with 858 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns, averaging 6.0 yards per carry.

Hart helped lead the Lakers to a 9-2 overall record this past fall (7-1 in the South Suburban Conference). Prior Lake earned its third state berth in the last four seasons, falling 10-7 to Maple Grove Nov. 7 in the Class 6A state quarterfinals.
