Two in Top Three for Lakers

The Prior Lake Nordic ski teams each had a top-three performer Jan. 14 at Hyland Park Reserve in Bloomington.

Senior Kaija Ornes led the Laker girls team to a third-place finish in the team standings in a South Suburban Conference 5,000 freestyle race, while junior Mitch McDonald led the boys to a fifth-place showing.

Eastview won the girls title with 167 points, followed by Burnsville (154), the Lakers (132), Lakeville (129), Independent School District 196 (116.5) and Northfield (55).

On the boys side, Eagan took the top spot (147.5), followed by Independent School District 196 (140.5), Lakeville South (136), Burnsville (116.5), the Lakers (107), Northfield (81) and Lakeville North (75).

Ornes finished third out of 54 racers with a time of 15.01. Junior McKenzie Lundquist was 11th (15:58), followed by junior Maria Berg in 12th (16:11).

Others: eighth-grader Olivia Jacobson (27th, 17:40), sophomore Gabi Brinkley (28th, 17:51), sophomore Lauren Benedict (30th, 18:01), junior Ellie Sullivan (31st, 18:13), sophomore Amelia Anderson (38th, 19:17), sophomore Amy Gustafson (41st, 19:44) and ninth-grader Maddie Anderson (50th, 21:13).

McDonald was also third in the boys' race out of 54 skiers, finishing with a time of 13:16. Junior Anders Kvalseth ended up 18th (14:41), while senior Joe Frawley was 22nd (14:57).

Others: junior Marco VanHeteren-Freeze (29th, 15:58), junior Noah Orham (31st, 16:11), junior Kevin Chem (35th 16:32), senior Carter Genrick (36th, 16:34), sophomore Alex Gullickson (40th, 16:51), sophomore Ryan Murr (41st, 16:56) and junior Jake Stiele (42nd, 17:01).

Both Prior Lake teams are back on the trails Jan. 20 in an SSC varsity sprints race at Vallewood Golf Course in Apple Valley at 3:30 p.m.
