Road leads back to state

The Prior Lake boys swimming team had no peers at the Section 3AA True Team.

The No. 8-ranked Lakers dominated the six-team field, winning with 958 points. That was well ahead of No. 8 Lakeville South (791) and Rosemount (711).

Eastview (674) was fourth, followed by Lakeville North (636) and Apple Valley (619).

It's the second straight year the Lakers have qualified for the Class AA State True Team, which is Jan. 24 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center at 6 p.m.

Prior Lake finished seventh last year. Top-ranked Minnetonka is the defending champion and the Skippers are back to defend their crown after winning the Section 6AA crown.

The other section winners: No. 3 Stillwater, No. 4 Eagan, Wayzata, Rochester Mayo, Forest Lake and St. Cloud Tech. The four wildcard teams: No. 2 Eden Prairie, No. 6 Edina, Anoka and Lakeville South.

The Lakers had two individual wins at the section true team from juniors Marshall Heskin and Craig Robock. Prior Lake also had two teams in the top six in two relays.

Heskin won the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.85 and was second in the 200 freestyle (1:50.19). Robrock was tops in the 200 individual medley (2:03.81) and fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.82).

In the 200 freestyle relay, the Lakers' team of Robrock, Heskin, junior Alex Leff and sophomore Colin Dwyer was second (1:31.76), while seniors Matt Anderson and Zak Jung and juniors Jack Dessler and Jonas Lemke was fourth (1:35.80).

In the 200 medley relay, Leff, Robrock, ninth-grader Henry Skinner and junior Jens Lund was third (1:44.28), while Lemke, Anderson, Jung and eighth-grader Sean Dwyer was sixth (1:47.30).

The 400 freestyle relay of Dessler, Lemke, Heskin and Colin Dwyer was sixth (3:30.70).

Meanwhile, Leff was strong in the sprints, taking second in the 50 freestyle (21.88) and third in the 100 freestyle (50.13). Colin Dwyer was fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:55.45).

Finishing fifth for the Lakers was Anderson in the 50 freestyle (23.49), senior Caleb Torvik in the 200 individual medley (2:13.05) and junior Austin Beck in the 500 freestyle (5:24.17).

Other top-10 individual finishes: Dessler in the 200 freestyle (6th, 1:56.67) and 100 freestyle (7th, 51.80), Beck in the 200 freestyle (10th, 1:59.58), Sean Dwyer in the 200 individual medley (6th, 2:14.12) and 100 breaststroke (6th, 1:08.57), Lemke in the 50 freestyle (8th, 24.19), Jung in the 100 butterfly (6th, 59.36), Torvik in the 100 butterfly (7th, 59.56), ninth-grader Lucas Pearson in the 100 butterfly (10th, 1:01.95), Colin Dwyer in the 500 freestyle (10th, 5:29.38), Skinner in the 100 backstroke (6th, 1:01.29), ninth-grader Jeremy Kallinowski in the 100 backstroke (10th, 1:04.33) and Lund in the 100 breaststroke (10th, 1:09.20).

In diving, ninth-grader Tyler Wiederhoeft was ninth (182.65) and eighth-grader Jonathan Hedburg was 10th (64.95).

The Lakers have a South Suburban Conference dual before the state true team Jan. 20 at Rosemount at 6 p.m.
