Depth leads to Lakers' title

The Prior Lake boys swim team had too much depth to be denied the Section 3AA title.

The No. 8-ranked Lakers defended their crown Feb. 27 in the finals at Hidden Oaks Middle School with juniors Alex Leff, Craig Robrock and Marshall Heskin leading the way.

The trio each qualified for state in two individual events and were part of both state-bound relays - the 200 and 400 freestyles.

The Class AA state meet is March 6-7 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Heskin is the defending champion in the 100 butterfly. The Lakers will also be looking to improve on their program-best sixth-place finish in the team standings a year ago.

The Lakers finished with 415 points at sections, well ahead of No. 10 Lakeville South (342). Eastview was a distant third (272), followed by Rosemount (260), Lakeville North (249), Burnsville (245) and Apple Valley (224).

"So proud of my Lakers ...," tweeted Prior Lake coach Justin Haycraft. "Great win, great swims. Looking forward to the state meet."

Meanwhile, Leff dominated the section meet. He was named Section 3AA Swimmer of the Year after winning the 50 and 100 freestyles. He broke the school record in the 50 freestyle, finishing with a time of 21.26.

Heskin held the previous mark of 21.34 set last year.

Leff also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.88, which is .64 off the school mark set by Kyle Robrock in 2012. So Leff will have that to shoot for at state.

Meanwhile, Craig Robrock, Kyle's younger brother, broke the school record in winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:55.23. Chris Baker held the old mark of 1:57.89 set in 1983.

Robrock finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48.42, which is about five seconds shy of the school mark of 4:43.15 set by Kyle Oschner in 2009.

Heskin already owns the school record in the 100 butterfly (49.99). He went 51.27 in the finals to finish second. He was also runner-up in the 200 freestyle (1:45.14).

The top-two finishers in each of the individual events and the winning relay teams automatically qualify for state. Beating the state cut is another way to get there.

Prior Lake didn't have to worry about the state cuts in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. They won both.

The 400 team of Heskin, Robrock, Leff and junior Jack Dessler broke the school record with a time of 3:12.87. The old mark was 3:14.73 set in 2012. That same foursome fell just short of the school mark (1:26.26) in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.00.

The Lakers' 200 medley team of eighth-grader Sean Dwyer, ninth-grader Henry Skinner, junior Jens Lund and senior Zak Jung finished fifth (1:41.12), missing the state (1:40.25) by less than a second.

Lund just missed state in the 100 breaststroke. He finished third with a time of 1:03.01 with the state cut being 1:02.09.

Sophomore Collin Dwyer earned a pair of top-eight finishes, taking fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:48.72) and sixth in the 500 freestyle (4:59.36). Dessler ended up fifth in the 100 freestyle (49.35) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:50.68).

Skinner was seventh in both the 100 backstroke (59.57) and 50 freestyle (22.98). Junior Jonas Lemke was eighth in the 100 backstroke (59.85), while Jung was seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.95) and Sean Dwyer was eighth (1:06.41).

Consolation swims (top 16) for the Lakers in the finals: junior Austin Beck in the 200 freestyle (14th, 1:55.78) and 500 freestyle (12th, 5:14.95), senior Caleb Torvik in the 200 individual medley (9th, 2:07.66) and 100 butterfly (14th, 57.29), Sean Dwyer in the 200 individual medley (14th, 2:11.76), Lemke in the 50 freestyle (9th, 22.88), Jung in the 100 butterfly (13th, 55.98), Lund in the 100 freestyle (12th, 51.93), sophomore Michael Heile in the 100 freestyle (15th, 53.35) and 100 backstroke (16th, 1:03.29) and ninth-grader Jerry Kalinowski in the 100 backstroke (14th, 1:01.18).

In diving, ninth-grader Tyler Wiederhoeft was 10th for the Lakers (197.40), while eighth-grader Jonathan Hedburg was 13th (150.05).
