There will be a lot of youth in the pool this spring for the Prior Lake synchronized swim team.

The Lakers have just one senior - Jessica Shorba - and just two swimmers back from last year who have placed at the state competition.

"We are looking forward to an exciting season," said Lakers coach Katy Bohnsack. "We have 10 returning swimmers and 10 new swimmers and a lot of enthusiasm."

Last spring, Prior Lake tied for 10th place in the state team standings with three other schools. Meanwhile, Wayzata continued its dominance winning its eighth straight crown.

The state meet and section competitions are made up of three different levels for the four events – solos, duets, trios and teams. The top level is extended, followed by longs and shorts.

At sections, the top-four routines for each level qualify for state. The Lakers had three routines competing at the highest level at state last year and had two in the longs division.

Shorba and senior Haley Wagner were two-thirds of the Lakers' trio shorts team last year that finished 12th at state. They were also part of the teams extended group, along with ninth-grader Claire Benson, that was also 12th.

"The other returning girls are ready to rock the short division this season and they have already started working on their routines," said Bohnsack. "Our strength this season is in the energy and dedication that all the girls are bringing to the team. It should be fun to watch the girls progress through the season."

Prior Lake will open the season March 26 in a figures meet at Richfield at 4 p.m. The Lakers follow with two home figures competitions - versus Bloomington Jefferson April 9 and St. Louis Park Apri 14.

The routines season starts April 16 at home versus Osseo/Maple Grove.

Other members of the Lakers this season include: juniors Taisia Fluharty and Willow Rivera, sophomores Sydney Rickert, Caitlin Giles and Haley Rodewald, ninth-graders McKenna Relling, Moira Ling and Sophia Zielke, eighth-graders Lauryn Baumer and Hannah Rodewald, seventh-graders Marrissa Broughten, Emma Gahlin, Tori Gens, Jennifer Lein, Aly Martinez and Abby Suor.

Prior Lake's annual Dolpin Show this season is set for May 8 at Hidden Oaks Middle School.

This year's West Section meet is May 12 (figures) and May 16 (routines) at Hopkins High School. The state meet is May 22 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
