The South Suburban Conference had a pretty big winter season, winning four of the 14 state team titles.

The fifth-year league won state titles in wrestling and boys basketball (Apple Valley), boys hockey (Lakeville North) and boys swimming (Eagan). The SSC was also top three in five sports.

How about individual titles? The SSC also snared seven crowns - six in wrestling.

Was that good enough to top the mighty Lake Conference? Let's see. The powerhouse, five-team league won three team titles - Hopkins in girls basketball, Edina in boys Alpine skiing and Wayzata in girls Nordic skiing.

How many top-three finishes for the Lake? Eight. How many individual champs, including relays? Eight.

Seems like a pretty even winter for the state's two power conferences, which culminated March 21 with the Lake's Hopkins beating the SSC's Eastview for the girls basketball title.

But if you count the fall sports, the Lake Conference pulls away big time with state titles in football (Eden Prairie), girls tennis (Edina), boys and girls cross country (both Wayzata) and girls swimming (Wayzata). Eagan netted the SSC's only crown (girls soccer).

The Lake also had seven top-three team finishes and eight individual/relay champions, while SSC had two and zero, respectively.

So what's ahead this spring? Twelve more team titles to be decided if you count clay target, synchronized swimming and badminton, which are sanctioned Minnesota State High School League sports and each league has at least one team in each.

The Lake Conference is the defending state champion in boys lacrosse (Eden Prairie), boys golf (Edina), girls golf (Wayzata), synchronized swimming (Wayzata), boys tennis (Wayzata), boys track (Hopkins) and girls track (Minnetonka).

The SSC's one title last spring came in softball (Lakeville South).
