The Prior Lake synchronized swimming team took to the waters for the first time this season March 26.

The Lakers competed in a figures meet at Richfield and fell 21-8 to the Spartans.

"The new swimmers did very well, better than most beginners," said Lakers coach Katy Bohnsack. "(Senior) Jessica Shorba worked really hard to improve her figures for this season and she did very well at this meet.

"(Ninth-grader) Claire Benson and junior Haley Wagner have both improved their figures from last year," added Bohnsack. "All swimmers did a great job and are excited for the next meet."

The Lakers' next two figures competitions are at home - versus Bloomington Jefferson April 9 and St. Louis Park April 14. Both are at 4 p.m.

The routines season starts April 16 at home versus Osseo/Maple Grove.

Against Richfield, Shorba finished fourth overall with a score of 59.162, while Benson was fifth 57.653 and Wagner was seventh (57.447).

Other finishes for the Lakers: ninth-grader Grace Cline in 13th (55.127), ninth-grader Moira Ling in 14th (54.855), junior Willow Rivera in 16th (50.548), seventh-grader Jennifer Lein in 17th (50.473), sophomore Caitlin Giles in 18th (49.447), sophomore Sydney Rickert in 19th (48.469) and junior Tasya Fluharty in 23rd (44.144).

Last spring, Prior Lake tied for 10th place in the state team standings with three other schools. Meanwhile, Wayzata continued its dominance winning its eighth straight crown.

The Lakers have just two swimmers back from last year - Shorba and Wagner - who have placed at the state competition.
