Back in the State field

The Prior Lake boys track team dominated the Section 3AAA True Team Meet May 9.

The Lakers won 10 events, including two relays, finishing with 1,071.5 points, which was well ahead of runner-up Rosemount (939.5) and third-place Burnsville (716.5).

Prior Lake is headed back to the Class 3A State True Team for a third straight year. The meet is May 19 in Stillwater. The Lakers have finished sixth the last two years.

The true-team format rewards depth. Prior Lake has tons of it. It went went one-two in three events at sections and took the top-three spots in the 300 hurdles.

"Our team performed extremely well, lead by an exceptional group of seniors," said Lakers coach Ken Klamm. "Across the board, the boys stepped up and wouldn’t be denied a third consecutive trip to the state true team."   

Senior Kevin Holmcombe won the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.90, followed by junior Mitch Wangler (41.45) and senior Tyler Knutson (41.92). In the 110 hurdles, Wangler won (15.04), while Knutson was third (15.89).

The Lakers' 4x800 team of seniors Babatunde Jinadu and Owen Kilanowski and juniors Daniel Wee and Ben Seme was a winner (8:22.93), as was the 4x200 team of seniors Ian O'Connor and Zachary Kulstad, junior Chandler Dahlquist and sophomore Keaton Schroeder (1:31.95).

Senior Colin Dwyer won two individual events, claiming the 1,600 (4:24.04) and the 800 (1:56.74). O'Connor won the 400 (51.04), while Kulstad was second (51.95). Kulstad captured the 200 (22.79), while O'Connor was third (23.22).

In the pole vault, seniors Trevon Comp and Devin Noer went one-two respectively with each hitting a height of 13-0. In the triple jump, Holcombe claimed his second victory (41-06), while Wangler was second (41-3 1/4).

In the 100, Schroeder was second (11.23), while junior Jordan Johnson was third (11.36). Jinadu was fourth in the 400 (52.79), while senior Noah Torvik was fifth in the 800 (2:01.31). Eighth-grader Gabe Smit was fourth in the 3,200 (10:02.65), while senior Connor Smith was fifth in the 1,600 (4:30.86).

O'Connor tied for third in the high jump (6-0), while Knutson was third in the long jump (21-01) and Schroeder was fifth (20-01).

Other top-10 finishes: Knutson in the triple jump (6th, 40-1 1/2), junior Jack Grieves in the discus (6th, 145-05), senior Jacob Gustin in the discus (9th, 128-11) and shot put (9th, 44-7 1/2), senior James O'Neal in the discus (10th, 127-06) and shot put (7th, 45-0 1/2), senior Ryan Parrish in the shot put (8th, 44-08), senior Daniel Olson in the pole vault (T10th, 10-0), Kulstad in the high jump (T7th, 5-8), junior Ikedi Abasiri (10th, 5-8), junior Nicholas Kartschoke in the 3,200 (6th, 10:09.41) and Torvik in the 1,600 (7th, 4:33.23).

The Lakers' 4x100 relay team of Johnson, Schroeder, junior Carter Johnson and Dahlquist took fourth (44.76), while the 4x400 team of ninth-grader Braeden Ericsson, Wee, Wangler and Smith ended up fifth (3:34.19).

Other finishes: Jordan Johnson in the long jump (11th, 19-0 1/2), sophomore Chase Hebel in the 3,200 (11th, 10:23.51), sophomore Nicholas Mullins in the 200 (12th, 24.30), Kilanowski in the 800 (14th, 2:08.45) and Carter Johnson in the 100 (11th, 11.64).

Other team finishes: Eastview (4th, 668.5), Apple Valley (5th, 630.5), Shakopee (6th, 559), Bloomington Jefferson (7th, 482.5), Bloomington Kennedy (8th, 481.5) and Chaska (9th, 424.5).
