Spot Short of the Crown

The Prior Lake girls track team couldn't track down Rosemount in the Section 3AAA True Team Meet May 10.

The Irish ran away from the nine-team field, winning with 967.5 points, while the Lakers were a distant second (863.50).

Prior Lake was seeking its eighth trip to the state true team in nine years. The eight section champs automatically qualify with one wildcard spot available. The Lakers will be in position for it, but in the past a Lake Conference team has usually garnered it.

This year's state true team is May 19 at Stillwater.

Meanwhile, Prior Lake won two events in the section competition, while ninth-grader Taynain Walgrave earning three top-three finishes.

Ninth-grader Mallory Stach won the 1,600 for the Lakers with a time of 5:14.90 and was runner-up in the 800 (2:23.49). Senior Madi Scholl tied for first in the high jump with a height of 5-2.

Walgrave was second in both the 300 hurdles (47.57) and in the 200 (26.08) and third in the 100 (12.73).

The Lakers' best relay finish came from the 4x400 team of Scholl and juniors Sydney Briggs, Cassandra Flaata and Kristyn Arends, which took second (4:07.08). The 4x800 team of sophomores Melissa Pfeiffer, Abigail Smith and Olivia Jacobson and junior Serena Pfieffer was fourth (10:25.06).

Arends was third in the 400 (59.09) and fourth in the 200 (26.63), while senior Gabi Brinkley was sixth in the both 1,600 (5:26.40) and 3,200 (11:58.08).

Sophomore Jessica Lilland led the Lakers in the pole vault taking third (9-6), while ninth-grader Grace Kashmark was sixth (9-0).

In the triple jump, ninth-grader Mariana Lehrer took fifth (33-07), while junior Maddy Bremer was sixth (33-04). Senior Christina Hanson was fourth in the long jump (16-07).

Scholl was also seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.21) and eighth in the 400 (1:01.69), while Briggs was fifth in the 300 hurdles (50.12). Eighth-grader Kathryn Nollette was eighth in both the 1,600 (5:32.96) and 3,200 (12:13.47).

In the throws, sophomore Grace Greenbush was fourth in the shot put (34-10 1/2), while senior Ashlyn Peppler was eighth (32-8 1/2). Senior Kayla Strodtman was fifth in the discus (104-04).

Other top-10 finishes for the Lakers: junior Gabrielle Mosher in the 100 hurdles (10th, 17.60), Bremer in the high jump (T7th, 4-10), Lehrer in the long jump (8th, 15-9 1/2) and Hanson in the triple jump (10th, 31-11 3/4).

The Lakers' 4x200 relay team of Flaata, Briggs and sophomores Jasmine Loyola and Alexandra Wiskow was sixth (1:53.94), while the 4x100 team of Loyola, Wiskow, Lilland and eighth-grader Bella Hanson took seventh (53.27).

Other finishes: Hanson in the 100 hurdles (16th, 18:28), Serena Pfeiffer in the 800 (12th, 2:33.63), Smith in the 800 (13th, 2:34.18), junior Jadin Heilman in the 3,200 (15th, 12:56.84), junior Jozi Tainter in the high jump (13th, 4-10), senior Siri Torvik in the pole vault (13th, 7-6), Walgrave in the long jump (14th, 15-02) and eighth-grader Emily Kulstad in the shot put (14th, 29-06).

Other team scores: Bloomington Jefferson (3rd, 774), Shakopee (4th, 724), Apple Valley (5th, 631.5), Burnsville (6th, 611.5), Eastview (7th, 598.5), Chaska (8th, 429.5) and Bloomington Kennedy (9th, 362).
