The Prior Lake girls swimming team made its biggest splash ever at the Class AA state meet.

Led by their relays and junior Skylar Welle, the Lakers finished a program-best sixth in the team standings with 105 points Nov. 18 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

It's the third time since 2011 the Lakers made the top 10 as a Class 2A program, finishing ninth in 2011 and 10th last year.

Prior Lake also set four new school records at state with Welle becoming the only Laker to ever go under 1:05 in the 100 breaststroke. She did it in the prelims (1:04.55) and ended up fifth in the finals with a time of 1:04.44.

Those two times broke the school mark of Kim Kazika, who swam at the University of Minnesota, who went 1:05.12 at state in 2005.

Welle, the only Laker to swim in an individual event at state, broke her own school record in the 200 individual medley, finishing ninth in the finals with a time of 2:07.73.

Welle just missed the finals (top eight), finishing with ninth in the prelims Nov. 17 with a time of 2:08.01, which broke her school mark of 2:08.64 set last year when she finished 11th. She's the only Laker to ever go under 2:09 in that event.

Meanwhile, Prior Lake's 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams also set new school marks.

The 400 freestyle relay team of senior Madison Shimek, juniors Madeline Mjoen and Olivia Hartell and ninth-grader Mary O'Neil finished fifth in the finals with a time of 3:31.52, which broke the school mark of 3:33.71 set last year.

In the prelims, that same foursome swam finished in 3:33.72 to end up seventh to make the finals.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Shimek, Mjoen, O'Neil and ninth-grader Ella Knutson broke the 1:37 barrier in both the prelims and the finals to break the school mark of 1:37.61 set last year.

In the prelims, the foursome swam a 1:36.79 to finish fourth. In the finals, the relay ended up fifth with a time of 1:36.32.

The Lakers' 200 medley relay team of Welle, O'Neil, Shimek and eighth-grader Grace Netz fell short of the school record (1:46.88) in both the prelims and the finals. But the foursome did make the medal stand with a sixth-place finish in the finals (1:47.60).

Edina ended up winning the state team title with 382.5 points, followed by Minnetonka (281.5) and Wayzata (133).

Rosemount was the highest-finishing South Suburban Conference school taking fourth (132), while Chanhassen was fifth (128).

Other team finishes for SSC teams: Eagan (10th, 86 points), Lakeville South (14th, 71), Lakeville North (16th, 60), Burnsville (26th, 11), Farmington (28th, 10) and Eastview (T6th, 4).
