The Prior Lake boys tennis team wrapped up the South Suburban Conference season by nearly knocking off the No. 4-ranked team in the state.

The Lakers won all three doubles matches May 7 at home versus Eastview, but were swept in singles play in a 4-3 loss. Prior Lake also lost 4-3 at Lakeville North May 2 in league action.

The Lakers (8-5 overall) finished the SSC season with a 5-4 record. The team ends the regular season May 9 at Minnetonka in a meeting of Section 2AA foes at 4 p.m.

Prior Lake’s May 8 match with Chanhassen, also a section squad, was cancelled due to rain.

The Section 2AA team tourney starts May 14 with north and south sub-section play. The Lakers will be the No. 1 seed in the south sub-section, while No. 7 Orono will be the top seed in the north.

Complete brackets come out today and will be available at mshsl.org. The Lakers have lost in the section semifinals the last three years. The semifinals and title match are May 21 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

In the loss to Eastview, the Lakers tried to load up their doubles and hoped to steal a win in singles. But the Lightning won all four singles matches in straight sets.

Senior Max Hall and ninth-grader Wyatt Crowell won at the No. 1 doubles spot for Prior Lake (2-6, 6-1, 6-3), while seniors Jaydon Olson and Jake Welke won at No. 2 (6-1, 7-6) and seniors Riley Rose and Michael Johnson cruised at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0).

In the loss to Lakeville North, three matches went three sets with the Lakers winning two of them. The Panthers won two of three in doubles.

Olson and Welke had the Lakers’ win in doubles at the No. 1 spot (4-6, 6-1, 6-4). Crowell won at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-1), as did Johnson at No. 3 (4-6, 6-1, 7-5).

Hall lost a tough three-setter at No. 1 singles (6-4, 2-6, 6-3).

The Lakers also competed in the four-team Lakeville North Invitational May 4, taking second to the host Panthers. Robbinsdale Armstrong and St. Paul Como Park tied for third.

Hall and Crowell took first in the No. 1 doubles flight, winning all three of their matches in straight sets. Olson and Welke were tops in the second doubles flight, while also going 3-0 with three straight-set wins.

Rose and senior Cooper Danielson were second in the third doubles flight.

In singles, Johnson was second in the first flight, as was senior Mathew Riley in the third flight.
