Grind Continues For The Defending State Champs

The Prior Lake boys lacrosse team followed its third South Suburban Conference with its second overtime loss.

In a match of last year's state title game — a 10-8 Lakers' win — Prior Lake fell 4-3 at Benilde-St. Margaret's May 5 to drop to 4-3 overall.

The Lakers went into the game off a 14-3 home win over Burnsville to improve to 3-1 in the conference. Senior Riley Bachinski led the charge with five goals and an assist.

Prior Lake is back in action May 7 at home versus Rosemount and is at Apple Valley May 9 in league games 7:30 p.m. The Lakers are at Mathomedi May 11 at 7 p.m.

In the win over Burnsville, the Lakers led 8-1 at the break and never looked back. Senior Wade Winter had three goals, while junior Conor Miller scored twice.

Senior Nathan Whittier finished with a goal and four assists, while senior Patrick Juell had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Jack Smith and junior Ryley Bester also had goals for Prior Lake.

Senior Luke Bloedow finished with three assists, while juniors Will Gilbert and Alex Jacobson, seniors Trenton Herubin, Joesph Plinck and Brandon Burggraaff and sophomore Blake Warren all head one.

Junior Colin Nauertz made four saves in goal for the Lakers, while junior Connor Mack also got time in net and made two stops.

In the loss to Benilde, Gilbert scored with 3:11 left in the fourth quarter to put his team up a goal. But the Red Knights answered with a goal with 1:08 left to force overtime.

Benilde had a long possession in overtime, which resulted in the game-winning goal.

Bloedow and senior Ben Jung each had goals for the Lakers, while Gilbert also had an assist.
