Junior Parker Ellis and sophomore Gabe Smit set some new standards for the Prior Lake boys track team May 17.

Both broke school records in their respective events at the Class 3A State True Team in Stillwater, helping the Lakers finish sixth out of 12 teams with 853.5 points.

Hopkins claimed the crown with 1,243 points, followed by Wayzata (1,180.5), Mounds View (1,093.5), Rosemount (1,051.5) and Blaine (956.5). Stillwater was seventh (827.5), followed by Lakeville South (734.5), Alexandria (718), Cambridge-Isanti (698.5), White Bear Lake (678) and Elk River (528).

The Lakers were making their fifth straight appearance at the state competition. It's the fourth time the team has finished sixth, also doing so in 2018, 2016 and 2015. Prior Lake was fifth in 2015.

The South Suburban Conference Championships are next for the Lakers. The prelims are May 22 and the finals are May 23 and the venue for both days is Rosemount High School.

At the state true team, Ellis won the long jump with a leap of 23-2 3/4. That broke his own school record of 22-5 1/2 that he set last year. Ellis won the Class AA state title in the long jump last year with a mark of 22 1 1/2.

Ellis also finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 43 2 1/2. He was fifth in that event at state last year and he also holds the school record (44 4 3/4) in that event as well.

Smit broke the school record in the 1,600 at the state true team, finishing sixth with a time of 4:19.50. Smit was 11th in that event at Class AA state meet last year (4:21.41).

Senior Michael Wu had a strong showing for the Lakers in the 400 at the state true team, taking second (50.35). Brett Ringer of Blaine edged Wu for the top spot by 0.02.

Junior Braeden Ericsson was eighth in the 300 hurdles for the Lakers (40.95), while senior Antonio Vargiu was eighth in the high jump (6-0).

Senior Jarrod Henderson led the Lakers in throws, finishing fourth in the shot put (51-10), while senior Nick Norby was sixth (50-6 1/4). Senior Mathias Saad finished seventh in the discus (147-02), while Henderson was ninth (145-03) and senior Erik Thompson was 10th (145-02).

Other individual finishes for the Lakers came from senior Nicholas Mullins in the 200 (12th, 22.65), Smit in the 800 (14th, 2:01.51), junior John Brennan in the 3,200 (15th, 10:10.00), junior Taylor Flaata in the high jump (T13th, 5-10), junior Nate Raddatz in the long jump (14th, 20-6 1/2) and senior Thomas Gonser in the shot put (15th, 46-10).

The Lakers' best relay finish came from the 4x200 team, which took fourth (1:31.05). The 4x100 team was sixth (43.50), while the 4x400 team was seventh (3:30.15) and the 4x800 team took ninth (8:40.53). Relay names have not been made available.

The Section 3AA meet follows the SSC Championships. The prelims are May 29 and the finals are May 31 and both days are at Prior Lake High School.

Prior Lake has won the Section 3AA crown the last three years. Last year, the team sent 14 athletes to state, which helped the team finish a program-best sixth in the team standings.

This year's state competition is June 7-8 at Hamline University in St. Paul. Wayzata is the defending team champion.
