The Prior Lake boys track team capped of its season with a bunch of state medals.

Senior Jarod Henderson and junior Parker Ellis led the way for the Lakers at the Class AA competition at Hamline University in St. Paul June 7-8 with each taking third in their respective events. Prior Lake had two relays finish seventh.

The Lakers ended up eighth in the team standings with 26 points. Hopkins won the title (78), followed by Rosemount (76) and Wayzata (68).

Senior Michael Wu and sophomore Gabe Smith also made the medal stand (top nine) for Prior Lake.

Ellis was hoping to defend his state title in the long jump and he came close. He was leading the competition after four rounds with a leap of 22-04, but two jumpers passed him in the final two rounds.

Wayzata's Dante White hit 22-05 on his final attempt to win the competition. Duluth Denfeld's Wryott Gerson also passed Ellis, hitting 22-04 on his fifth attempt. Gerson was awarded second since his second-best jump was a half inch better than Ellis' next-best.

So Ellis missed a second state title by one inch and was a half inch from second. Ellis also competed in the triple jump and finished 11th (42-7 1/2).

Henderson was seeded No. 2 in the shot put and ended up third with a toss of 56-04. He hit that mark on his second attempt. The winning throw was 64-04 from Rosemount's Max Otterdahl, who won the competition for a second straight year.

Wu finished seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 49.93. Smith was ninth in the 1,600 (4:20.74).

Wu, Ellis and seniors Nicholas Mullins and Keaton Schroeder made up the Lakers' 4x200 relay that was seventh (1:29.36), while Wu, Mullins and juniors Taylor Flaata and Braeden Ericsson also finished seventh in the 4x400 relay (3:25.13).

Senior Jack Steinkamp finished 16th in the long jump (17-10 1/4) for Prior Lake, as did Mullins in the 200 (23.04). Schroeder was 21st in the 100 (11.49).

Senior Antonio Vargiu took 13th in the pole vault (13-0), while Ericsson was 12th in the 300 hurdles (40.67).

While Rosemount was the highest finishing South Suburban Conference team, Prior Lake was second. They were the only two SSC schools in the top 10.

Other team finishes by the SSC included Eastview (14th, 19 points), Shakopee (22nd, 15.5), Burnsville (23rd, 14.5), Lakeville North (T38th, 7) and Lakeville South and Farmington (T48th, 4).
