Four Laker Routines to State

The Prior Lake synchronized swimming team will have four routines competing at the state meet.

Three of them are in solos.

The Lakers finished fourth in the West Section meet May 16 at Hopkins High School with Wayzata winning the crown, followed by the host Royals and Eden Prairie. Blake was fifth.

The state meet is May 22 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center starting at 8 a.m. Wayzata has won the last eight crowns. The Lakers tied for 10th in the team standings last year.

Senior Jessica Shorba and junior Haley Wagner competed at state for the Lakers last year and both earned bids this spring in solos, along with ninth-grader Grace Cline.

Tthe group of Cline, junior Willow Rivera, ninth-graders Moira Ling and Claire Benson, sophomores Sydney Rickert and Caitlin Giles and seventh-grader Jennifer Lein qualified in team shorts with a score of 56.254, finishing fourth overall.

The state and section competitions are made up of three different levels for the four events – solos, duets, trios and teams. The top level is extended, followed by longs and shorts.

At sections, the top-four routines in each event from each level qualify for state.

Cline ended up fourth in short solos with a score of 58.729, while Wagner was fourth in extended solos (58.986). Shorba was runner-up in long solos (63.182).

"All of our routines had strong swims and put their whole effort into their swims and it showed in their performance," said Lakers coach Katy Bohnsack. " The short team had a good swim. They have lots of work to do in the next few days on figures and routines. It has been an successful season for all the new swimmers and I am very proud of each of them.

Prior Lake also had a couple of near misses. Shorba and Wagner ended up fifth in long duets (60.909), while Cline, Ling and Lein were fifth in short trios (55.090) and Giles, Rickert and Rivera were sixth (53.335).

In short duets, eighth-grader Lauryn Baumer and seventh-grader Tori Dens took eighth (52.920), while seventh-graders Marrisa Broughten and Emma Gahlin finished ninth (52.126).

In team shorts, Baumer, Broughten, Gahlin and Gens ended up ninth (52.398), while junior Taysa Fluhardy, ninth-graders Sophie Zielke and Makenna Relling, sophomore Haley Rodewald, eighth-grader Hannah Rodewald and seventh-grader Abby Suor were 11th (50.327).
