Busy Two Days in Pool

The Prior Lake boys swimming team had a busy 24 hours.

The Lakers improved to 3-1 in South Suburban Conference duals with a 95-82 win at Farmington Jan. 5 and then competed in the 16-team Maroon & Gold Invitational the next day at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

The Lakers were in the maroon division and finished fifth with 277 points. Sartell-St. Stephen won the crown (372.5), followed Eau Claire Memorial (338), Simley (306) and Rochester Century (304).

Prior Lake picked up two wins at the invite with senior P.J. Lenz winning the diving competition and junior Sean Dwyer claiming the 500 freestyle.

The Lakers are back in the pool Jan. 12 at Eagan and return home Jan, 16 to take on Rosemount. Both SSC duals start at 6 p.m. The Section 2AA True Team meet is set for Jan. 20 at the Eden Prairie Community Center at 1 p.m.

at the Maroon & Gold invite, Dwyer had a strong time in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 4:44.04. That was well below the state cut time of 4:51.07.

Lenz won the diving competition with a six-dive score of 259.40. Junior Erik Thompson was second (227.35).

Dwyer was also runner-up in the 50 freestyle (22.01), while senior Henry Skinner had a pair of top-three individual finishes. He was second in the 100 freestyle (48.82) and third in the 100 backstroke (56.26). Senior Lucas Pearson was third in the 100 butterfly (55.60).

Two of the Lakers' three relays finished second. Dwyer, Skinner, Pearson and senior Jeremy Kalinowski teamed up in the 200 medley (1:40.58), while Skinner, Dwyer, Kalinowski and sophomore Jaden Chant made up the 400 freestyle squad (3:22.09).

The 200 freestyle team of senior Benjamin Johnson, junior Trey Hirt and ninth-graders Tyler Buss and Gunnar Anderson was 15th (1:38.03).

Other finishes for the Lakers: Buss in the 100 breaststroke (8th, 1:04.90) and the 200 freestyle (16th, 1:56.08) and Chant in the 200 individual medley (15th, 2:13.31).

In the dual win over Farmington, the Lakers swept all three relays. Dwyer, Skinner, Buss and Pearson won the 200 medley (1:44.20), while Johnson, Kalinowski, Dwyer and senior Spencer Will claimed the 200 freestyle (1:33.92) and Skinner, Chant, Kalinowski and eighth-grader Malcolm Jones (3:28.59) won the 400 freestyle.

Dwyer won the 200 individual medley (2:04.24) and the 100 breaststroke (1:03.40), while Skinner claimed the 50 freestyle (22.53) and the 100 backstroke (56.99). Kalinowski was tops in the 100 freestyle (52.49), as was Will in the 100 butterfly (58.33) and Lenz in diving (258.10).
