Scores On The Way Up

The scores for the Prior Lake gymnastics team are on the way up.

The Lakers earned a season-best mark of 142.550 at the Lakeville North Invitational Jan. 13 to finish eighth in a loaded field. Detroit Lakes, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, won with a 150.750 total.

The host Panthers, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, was second (147.750) in the 16-team field, followed by No. 1 Stillwater (145.650), No. 7 East Ridge (144.400), No. 6 Cambridge-Isanti (143.400), No. 9 Maple Grove (14.300) and No. 3 Lakeville South (142.950).

Prior Lake followed the invite, winning a South Suburban Conference competition at home Jan. 16 over No. 10 Rosemount. The Lakers finished with a score of 139.9, compared to 139.5 for the Irish.

The Lakers were also in action Jan. 11 at Breck, winning with a score of 136.75, compared to 135.8 for the Mustangs.

Prior Lake has three SSC meets left before turning its attention the Section 2AA competition, which is Feb. 16 at Lakeville South. They are at Eastview (Jan. 23), versus Farmington (Jan. 30) and home to Eagan (Feb. 5). All three start at 6 p.m.

Lakers coach Barb Kass is pleased with her team's progress, especially at the Lakeville North invite.

"It was a great meet for us," Kass said. "We had our five varsity all-arounders competing together for the first time this season and we were able to reach our highest score so far.

"We started really strong on floor and continued that effort on vault and bars," Kass added. "We had a little trouble staying on the beam once again, so we still have room for improvement."

Sophomore Seleena Wallace had the Lakers' best finish at the invite. She was fourth on the floor exercise with a 9.50. Wallace had the team's top all-around score with a 36.400, including a 9.250 on the vault, 8.50 on the uneven bars and an 8.8 on the balance beam.

Sophomore Kyra Hanson had a score of 35.500 in the all-around. Her individual scores were 9.250 on both the bars and the floor, 9.150 on the beam and 7.85 on the vault. Eighth-grader Madi Mathison also had an all-around score of 35.500 with scores of 9.0 on the bars, 8.9 on the beam, 8.850 on the vault and 8.750 on the floor.

Senior Kaylie Kizer's scores were 34.350 in the all-around, 8.950 on the beam, 8.6 on the bars, 8.5 on the floor and 8.3 on the vault while sophomore Josie Baldzicki's scores were 33.750 in the all-around, 8.650 on the vault, 8.550 on the bars, 8.4 on the floor and 8.150 on beam.

Against Rosemout, Wallace won the all-around (36.7), whle Baldzicki was second (33.6). Mathison won the bars (9.15), while Wallace was second (8.95) and Kizer was fourth (8.4).

Wallace won the floor (9.525), while Kizer was fourth (9.075) and Mathison was fifth (9.075).

Wallace was also second on the vault (9.25), while Baldzicki was fourth (8.8). Wallace was runner-up on the beam (8.975), while Kizer was fifth (8.6).

Others: eighth-grader Kylie Thompson on the floor (8th, 8.725), Baldzicki in the floor (10th, 8.6), the beam (6th, 8.55) and the bars (8th, 7.65), Mathison on the beam (7th, 8.4), sophomore Toriana Blair on the beam (10th, 6.475) and the vault (9th, 8.15, ninth-grader Hannah Walter on the bars (6th, 7.975), sophomore Maddie Tschida on the vault (8th, 8.3) and senior Doris Mor on the vault (10th, 7.9).

Against Breck, Hanson led the Lakers in the all-around taking second (34.800).
