Laker Teams Find Themselves In The Runner-Up Spot

The Prior Lake boys and girls track teams settled for the No. 2 spot in the Section 3AAA True Team May 8 on their own track.

Rosemount kept the Lakers from winning both titles to secure the automatic berth into the Class 3A state True Team, which is May 18 in Stillwater.

The Irish boys won the section crown with 1,075.5 points, while the Lakers scored 1,013.5 points in the nine-team field.

On the girls side, Rosemount scored 1,054.5 points, followed by the Lakers (919.5).

Along with the eight section winners, four wildcard teams make state. Both Prior Lake teams could earn those bids, but they've not been released. The Prior Lake boys are seeking a fourth straight berth, while the girls are hoping to get there for the ninth time in 11 seasons.

Meanwhile, at sections, sophomores Mallory Stach and Taynian Walgrave led the Prior Lake girls, while junior Keaton Schroeder paced the boys.

Walgrave won the 100 hurdles with a school-record time of 14.74 and the 100 meters (12.63). Stach dominated in the distance events, winning the 1,600 (5:18.80) and the 3,200 (11:45.35).

Schroeder claimed the 100 (11.14) and the 200 (22.99). He also anchored the winning 4x100 relay with senior Carter Johnson, sophomore Parker Ellis and junior Jarod Henderson part of that crew (43.85).

The boys' 4x400 team of seniors Mitch Wangler and Jordan Wakeman, junior Chase Hebel and sophomore Michael Wu also took first (3:30.21). Wangler won the 300 hurdles (40.29), while Ellis was tops in the long jump (21-10 1/4).

For the Laker girls, senior Kristyn Arends won the 800 (2:24.82).

The girls were also runner-up in three relays, They included the 4x800 team of Arends, ninth-grader Kathryn Nollette, junior Melissa Pfeiffer and senior Serena Pfeiffer (10:09.59), the 4x200 team sophomores Allison Alessi and Kristin Kay, ninth-grader Ashley George and eighth-grader Jillian Hively (1:50.17) and the 4x100 team of sophomores Grace Reedy and Aaliya Guy, ninth-grader Hannah Ulsager and junior Abigail Yost (52.11).

The 4x400 team of sophomore Katarina Decaroli, seniors Cassadra Flaata and Hannah Caldwell and ninth-grader Natalie Thoms was third (4:19.58).

Other top-five finishes for the girls: senior Sydney Briggs in the 100 hurdles (5th, 15.16) and the 300 hurdles (5th, 49.46), Hively in the 100 (4th, 13.20) and the 200 (4th, 27.46), Kay in the 100 (5th, 13.24), Caldwell in the 400 (3rd, 1:01.85) and the 200 (5th, 27.54), Nollette in the 3,200 (4th, 11:52.21), sophomore Grace Kashmark in the pole vault (4th, 9-6), sophomore Mariana Lehrer in the long jump (3rd, 16-1 1/4) and ninth-grader Emily Kulstad in the shot put (3rd, 34-7 1/2).

For the Laker boys, Wangler was second in the 110 hurdles (15.60), while ninth-grader Gabe Smith was runner-up in the 1,600 (4:28.67) and third in the 800 (2:04.12).

The 4x800 team of senior Ben Seme, sophomores Shane Draginis and Jacob Zollar and ninth-grader Jaden Setter was third (8:41.14).

Other top-five finishes: senior Ikedi Abasiri in the 100 (4th, 11.41), in the 200 (3rd, 23.22) and the high jump (4th, 6-2), Wu in the 400 (3rd, 52.13), senior Daniel Wee in the 400 (5th, 52.85), senior Joseph Casey in the pole vault (3rd, 10-6), Schroeder in the long jump (3rd, 20-0), sophomore Dylan Bair in the long jump (4th, 19-11), senior Nicholas Kartschoke in the 3,200 (3rd, 10:02.60) and Henderson in the shot put (4th, 45-0 1/2) and the discus (4th, 135-04).

Following the state true team, the South Suburban Conference Championships are May 22-23 in Prior Lake.
