Netters Clear First Playoff Hurdle With Sweep

The Prior Lake boys tennis opened the Section 2AA playoffs with an easy sweep.

The Lakers rolled over Mankato East 7-0 at home May 17 to advance to the semifinals for the third straight year. Prior Lake won all four singles matches in straight sets.

The Lakers (11-5 overall) will face No. 8-ranked Minnetonka in the semifinals May 22 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter at 9 a.m. The other semifinal features fourth-ranked Orono versus Mankato West.

The winners play right after for the title.

In beating Mankato East, junior Max Hall rolled at No. 1 singles for the Lakers in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Senior Aditya Acharya didn't lost a game at the No. 2 spot (6-0, 6-0), while junior Michael Johnson cruised at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2), as did eighth-grader Wyatt Crowell at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1).

In doubles, juniors Jaydon Olson and Jake Welke won easily at the top spot (6-1, 6-1), as did juniors Matthew Riley and Matt Baer at No. 3 (6-0, 6-1). Junior Riley Rose and Cooper Danielson won at three sets at No. 2 (2-6, 6-4, 6-4).

The Lakers go into the semifinals against Minnetonka winning their last seven matches.

The Section 2AA singles and doubles tournaments follow team play, starting May 25. The finals are May 29 in St. Peter.

This year’s Class AA state tournament is set for June 5-8 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Minnetonka is the defending champion.
