The Prior Lake boys soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to 11 straight Sept. 25 with its sixth shutout victory.

The No. 8-ranked Lakers got goals from seniors Jake Leonard and Luke McCutcheon in a 2-0 South Suburban Conference home win over Burnsville.

Prior Lake (8-1-4 overall, 5-0-2 in the SSC) went into the game off a scoreless home tie with Farmington Sept. 20 in league play. The game was stopped at halftime due to severe weather, which made it an official game.

Prior Lake can clinch the SSC title outright Sept. 27 at Apple Valley at 5 p.m. The Lakers have a big home game at No. 4 Minnetonka Sept. 29 at 1:30 p.m. The Skippers (7-1-4) are one of the teams to beat in Section 2AA.

Prior Lake ends the regular season Oct. 2 at Rosemount in league play at 7 p.m.

"I’m sure the guys are enjoying the run they’ve put together," Lakers coach Mike Shebuski said. "However, it’s not something that we’ve really spoken about specifically. They’re a competitive group that has set some high goals for themselves and, as we’ve said all year, we just want to keep getting better every day.

"Results are great, but our conversations aren’t about wins – they’re about being willing to work hard, and about good teammates and good people," Shebuski said. "The boys have approached things the right way and it seems like they really enjoy being out on the field together every day. I know that we’ve enjoyed being out there with them as coaches, and that’s made the season a lot of fun."

Section quarterfinal play starts Oct. 9. The Lakers are the defending champion. Edina (5-3-2) is also in the field and are the only team to beat Prior Lake this fall, winning 2-0 back on Aug. 28.

Other teams in the field: Shakopee (4-6-1), Bloomington Jefferson (6-5-2), Chanhasssen (4-6-1), Chaska (3-6-2) and Eden Prairie (1-4-2).

In beating Burnsville, Leonard scored on a penalty kick in the 19th minute. McCutcheon scored in the 57th minute to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Senior Owen Antonoplos had the assist.

Phelan recorded his sixth shutout in goal.

"The boys did a great job," Shebuski said. "They’re really working hard and doing a good job focusing on the things we want to work on.  We know there are areas we can still work to improve, and they’re willing to keep working at it every day.

"Burnsville did a good job pressing us, and we had to move the ball quickly and work together to be successful," Shebuski added. "We’re defending well as a group, and still working to connect more as we move the ball forward."
