The Prior Lake girls basketball team has the potential to be a one of the state's elite squads.

But in the Lakers' season opener Nov. 27, they faced a team that is already there. Wayzata rolled to an 88-61 non-league win.

Prior Lake started slow, trailing 46-17 at the break and couldn't recover. Senior McKenna Hofschild led Prior Lake with 21 points, giving her 1,993 points for her career.

The Lakers will take on Park Center Dec. 1 in the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Hopkins High School at 7 p.m. Hofschild will almost certainly surpass the 2,000-point mark in that contest.

Park Center won 19 games last year, beating the Lakers 78-56 in the Tip Off Classic last December.

Meanwhile, Wayzata went 25-3 last season, getting upset in the semifinals of the Section 6AAAA tourney by Minneapolis Southwest.

The Lakers won the Section 2AAAA title last year, earning the program's first-ever trip to state as a Class 4A school. Prior Lake looks to be the favorite to defend its crown, but nothing is certain.

The Trojans had four players in double figures in the win over the Lakers, while junior Haidyn Pitsch finished with 10 points for Prior Lake.

Sophomores Emily Kulstad and Kate Trachsel each had seven points for the Lakers, while senior Reagan Dahl chipped in five.

The Lakers' home opener is Dec. 6 against New Prague. Prior Lake opens the South Suburban Conference season at home to Rosemount. Both games start at 7 p.m.

Prior Lake follows with two SSC road games against Apple Valley Dec. 14 and Shakopee Dec. 18. Both start at 7 p.m. The Sabers are a section foe.
