The Prior Lake dance team earned the top spot in jazz funk at the Lakeville South Invitational Jan. 5.

The Lakers finished with four ranking points, which was one better than runner-up Maple Grove. Lakeville North was third in the 10-team field with nine rank points.

Brainerd was fourth (12), followed by Anoka (15), Lakeville South (18), Farmington (21), Rogers (24), Rochester John Marshall (27) and Minneapolis South (30).

In high kick, the Lakers ended up fourth out of seven teams with 12 ranking points. Brainerd won (6), followed by Anoka (7), Lakeville North (7), Lakeville South (14.5) and Rochester John Marshall (21).

The Section 1AAA meet is set for Feb. 9 at Bloomington Kennedy High School. The Lakers will compete the Wayzata Invitational Jan. 19 and the Eastview Showcase Jan. 26 to prepare for it.

Prior Lake was sixth in both jazz and high kick at the Class AAA state meet last season. The team has qualified six straight years in jazz, finishing a program-best fifth in 2017. Last year was the Lakers' first-ever berth in high kick.

The top-three teams from Section 1AAA in both dances make the state field. Prior Lake was third in both dances last year at sections behind Eastview and Lakeville North, respectively.

The state meet is set for Feb. 15-16 at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Jazz is the first day, while high kick is on the second.
