The Prior Lake boys hockey team used some late heroics to snap a four-game losing skid.

Senior Nathan Green scored with 1.3 second left in regulation to tie the game and senior Charlie Kashmark scored 2:06 into overtime to lift the Lakers to a 5-4 South Suburban Conference win at Burnsville Jan. 5.

The Lakers (6-6 overall, 5-3 in the SSC) went into the game going 0-3 in the Hockey for Life Classic at Dakotah Ice Arena Dec. 27-29, losing 3-2 to Lakeville North, 8-0 to Chaska and 2-1 to St. Thomas Academy.

Prior Lake will stay on the road Jan. 8 playing at Farmington in league play at 7 p.m., before returning home Jan. 12 to take on Lakeville South in SSC action at 3 p.m.

In beating Burnsville, the Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but gave it all back and then some in the second period, allowing four Blaze goals.

Burnsville picked up a penalty with 1:32 left to play in the game, so Prior Lake played the final minute on a two-man advantage after pulling the goalie. Senior Ty Trachsel assisted on Green's tying goal, which came off a rebound near the net.

In overtime, Kashmark picked up a loose puck in the Burnsville zone after a defensive misplay and turned it into the game-winner. Junior Sam Emmerich had the assist.

Seniors Kobe Kimmes and Jackson Jutting had first-period goals for the Lakers, while sophomore Matt Beaty scored 1:32 into the second period to put his team up 3-0.

Kashmark, juniors Lazarus Kaebel, Preston Lindholm, Hunter Lincoln and Nick Speltz and senior Wade Winter each had an assist.

Junior Sam Shopbell made the start in goal for Prior Lake and finished with 24 saves.

At the Hockey for Life Classic, the Lakers scored just three goals in the three games. Speltz scored against St. Thomas Academy, while Kashmark and Jutting had goals against Lakeville North.

Prior Lake trailed 2-0 after the first period in every game. Chaska is also a Section 2AA foe and the Hawks went on to win the classic, including victories over No. 6-ranked Eden Prairie (6-3) and No. 3 Edina (4-3).

Prior Lake is 2-2 against sections teams so far with wins over Shakopee (7-0) and Chanhassen (5-0) and the other loss to Eden Prairie (5-1).

The Lakers will get top-ranked Minnetonka and Holy Family at home Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, respectively, in two more games against section teams. The Lakers will likely need to at least beat Holy Family to get a home playoff game in the quarterfinals.
