Three Wins At Invite After First SSC Dual Loss

The Prior Lake wrestling team followed its first South Suburban Conference loss by winning three of four duals at the Cambridge-Isanti Invitational Jan. 19.

The Lakers earned wins over the host Bluejackets (39-37), Mora (40-36) and Staples-Motley (52-13), while falling to Sartell (34-24). Prior Lake went into duals invite off a 47-19 loss at Lakeville South Jan. 18.

Prior Lake (9-8 overall, 5-1 in the SSC) is back on the mat Jan. 24 at home versus No. 1-ranked Shakopee in league action at 7 p.m. The Lakers will compete in the Rochester Century Invitational Jan. 26 at 10 a.m.

Prior Lake's final two SSC duals are home versus No. 3 Apple Valley Jan. 31 and at Burnsville Feb. 7. The Lakers also have a triangular match Feb. 1 at Jordan taking on Scott West and Belle Plaine.

The Section 2AAA team tourney is Feb. 15 at Burnsville. The Lakers are looking like the No. 5 seed at this point, behind Shakopee, Apple Valley, No. 6 New Prague and Lakeville South.

Other teams in the field: Lakeville North, Eastview, Rosemount and Burnsville.

In the Lakers' win over Cambridge-Isanti, senior Calvin Sund cliched the dual with a fall at 195 pounds. Sund is ranked No. 1 in the state at that weight and he also picked up his 100th-career win at the duals invite.

Sophomore Teagan Block, ranked No. 8 at 106 pounds, won by fall at that weight for the Lakers, as did sophomore Gabe McDonald at 113, ninth-grader Cole Edwards at 138, sophomore Colton Sund at 145 and sophomore Billy Trees at 182.

Junior Chase Bloomquist won 3-2 at 132 pounds for Prior Lake.

In beating Mora, ninth-grader TJ Gonsor earned a fall at heavyweight to give the Lakers the win. Cole Edwards, Colton Sund and Trees also had pins at 138, 145 and 182, pounds, respectively.

Block earned a 16-5 decision at 106 pounds, while junior Cory St. Martin won 4-2 at 126. Bloomquist won 11-1 at 132, while Calvin Sund earned a technical fall at 220 (17-0).

Against Staples-Motley, wins by fall for Prior Lake went to Block at 113, St. Martin at 126 and Bloomquist at 132.

Other wins: Cole Edwards at 138 (forfeit), sophomore Caleb Rios at 152 (forfeit), Trees at 182 (15-2), sophomore Brandon Butler at 220 (forfeit) and Gonser at heavyweight (forfeit).

In the loss to Sartell, wins Prior Lake went to St. Martin at 126 (8-2), Colton Sund at 152 (10-3), senior Logan Edwards at 160 (7-1), Trees at 182 (10-9), Calvin Sund at 195 (fall) and Gonser at heavyweight (fall).
