Cagers Look Like The State's No. 1-Ranked Team

The Prior Lake boys basketball team is 2-0 since its ascension to the No. 1 spot in the Class 4A state poll.

The Lakers rolled to a 68-54 home win over Andover Jan. 17 and followed with its 12th straight victory the next day, 89-58 at Burnsville in South Suburban Conference play.

Prior Lake (12-1 overall, 6-0 in the SSC) is back on the league court Jan. 26 at home versus No. 6 Lakeville North at 7 p.m. The Panthers are also 6-0 in the SSC.

In the win over Burnsville, the Lakers were up 38-28 at the break and never looked back in the second half. Seniors Dawson Garcia and Sam Nissen each had 22 points to lead Prior Lake, while senior Robert Jones had 14.

Senior Carson Schoeller chipped in nine points, while junior Tyree Ihenacho and senior Nicholas Mullins both had six.

Against Andover, Prior Lake was down two points at the break (28-26), but dominated the second half. Jones led the way with 20 points, while Garcia had 16.

Nissen finished with eight points, followed by senior Jake Veldman with seven and Ihenacho with six.

Prior Lake is one of five Section 2AAAA teams ranked in the top 10, including No. 5 Edina, No. 7 Shakopee, No. 9 Eden Prairie and No. 10 Chaska. Other teams in the field are Minnetonka, Chanhassen and Bloomington Jefferson.

The Lakers have wins over Shakopee and Chaska in the section and will take on Jefferson at home Feb. 9.
