Effort combined with talent and passion are big reasons Macy Violett has had an extremely success athletic career at Prior Lake.

The senior is a three-sport letterwinner - girls soccer, cross county skiing and track - and she's also the school's Athena Award winner.

The annual award is given to the most outstanding female athlete to each metro area high school. Violett will receive her award at the 42nd annual banquet, which is set for May 2 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

"Besides being such a talented runner and fierce competitor, Macy is one of the most compassionate athletes we have had in our program," said Lakers girls track coach Scot Jaenicke. "She's a great leader and unselfish team player who is always willing to do what is best for the good of the team.

"We have had some outstanding people and some great athletes come through our program," added Jaenicke. "Macy is one of those elite athletes who is even more elite as a person - just an exceptional young woman."

Violett is entering her fourth season on the Lakers' track team this spring. She's a three-time lettewinner and twice named All-South Suburban Conference. She's also a three-time letterwinner on the soccer field and twice earned All-SSC honorable mention honors. She's earned three letters on the Nordic ski trails as well.

Violett will play two sports in college next year at the Division II level - track and soccer. She signed her national letter of intent back in February to compete at Southwest Minnesota State.

If anyone can be successful playing two college sports, it's Violett. It takes a lot of commitment, focus, skill and energy. Those are characteristics Prior Lake girls soccer coach David Graham has seen in Violett over the years.

"Macy has been a great asset to our program the last four years, the last three being spent on the varsity team where she probably played about 95 percent or more of the time." said Graham. "We rarely subbed her out as she could play a full 80 minutes without getting too fatigued.

"She is a great player to coach," added Graham. "She works extremely hard, but always has a smile on her face. Her tireless work rate and great attitude helped her improve dramatically over the course of her high school career and I'm sure it will help her at the college level.

"We will certainly miss her presence next season, but we are excited for her as she moves on to her next adventure."

On the soccer field, Violett was a big part of the Lakers' success the last two seasons. Prior Lake went 28-6-3 in that span (13-2-3 in the SSC), but fell short of a state berth.

This past fall, the Lakers lost to Eden Prairie 1-0 in the Section 2AA title game. The year before, Prior Lake fell by the same to the same team in the section semifinals.

On the track, Violett has competed in the last three Class AA state meets. Last spring, she was part of the Lakers' 4x400 relay team that finished fifth.

In 2012, she was part of the 4x800 relay that took second and the year before was on that same relay that finished fifth.

Violett is still trying to get to state in an individual event. She was fifth in the 800 last year in the Section 3AA meet (the top two qualify). That's an event she'll likely run again this spring, along with perhaps the 400. She'll no doubt be again a key member of the Lakers' relays.
