The season is approaching fast for the Prior Lake wrestling team.

And two of the Lakers' grapplers - ninth-graders Curtis LeMair and Kenny O'Neil - were gearing up for the season in the Intermat JJ Classic Nov. 9 in Rochester.

The InterMat JJ Classic was created in honor of Justin Kukowski, an avid athlete and sports fan who passed away from brain cancer in 2007. The proceeds from the event go to the Justin Kukowski Center, a cancer support center located in the Twin Cities.

The JJ Classic is also one of the premier preseason tournaments with many of the top wrestlers from Minnesota competing, along with other wrestlers from around the nation.

LeMair took the title in the 100-pound division, going 5-0. He won 3-1 in overtime of Israel Navarro of Willmar in the title match. O'Neil wrestled at 145 pounds and went 3-2, but did not place.

LeMair and O'Neil look to have big roles for the Lakers this winter. Prior Lake is seeking a fifth straight Section 2AAA title. Last year, the Lakers lost in the Class 3A state title match to perennial power Apple Valley. The three years before that, Prior Lake was third in the state team tourney.

LeMair looks to open the Lakers' season at 106 pounds, while O'Neil is expected to be at 138 or 145. Last winter, O'Neil qualified for state at 126 pounds, going 1-2 in the Class 3A individual tourney.

Prior Lake will open the season Nov. 29 in the Hastings Duals at 9:30 a.m. The Lakers open the South Suburban Conference season at home Dec. 4 versus Apple Valley at 7 p.m.

The Eagles beat the Lakers 56-9 in last year's state title match to win their ninth straight crown and 16th in the last 17 seasons.

Meanwhile, the first Class 3A state rankings will be released Nov. 21 on The Guillotine Website,http://theguillotine.com/wp/high-school-rankings.
