Playoff Fever To Strike

The Prior Lake baseball team put itself in position for a top-four seed with a strong finish.

The Lakers went 3-1 in its final four regular season games, including a 5-3 home win over Chanhassen May 24 in a battle of Section 2AAAA foes.

Prior Lake went into the contest off a 6-4 home loss May 22 to No. 3-ranked Minnetonka, another section foe.

Section 2AAAA seeds come out today May 27) and will be available at www.mshsl.org. Seeds are based solely on QRF rankings by www.minnesota-scores.net.

Minnetonka (14-5) will be the No. 1 seed, followed by Chaska (16-4). The Lakers (12-8) are vying with Edina (11-8) and Eden Prairie (11-9) for the No. 3 and 4 seeds. Shakopee (9-10) will be the sixth seed, followed by Chanhassen (9-10) and Bloomington Jefferson (9-10).

Section quarterfinal play starts May 31 at the site of the higher seed. Second-round play is June 1.

In beating Chanhassen, senior Lucas Pumper went six innings for the win, allowing three runs (two earned), while fanning three. Senior John McCaustlin go the save with a scoreless seventh.

The Lakers led 5-1 after four innings. Junior Corbin Cross hit a solo homer for the Lakers. Senior Derek Kay was 2 for 2 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. Pumper went 2 for 3 with a double.

Junior Ryan McDonald was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while senior Cody Kashmak also had a run knocked in.

In the loss to Minnetonka, Prior Lake trailed 5-4 after four innings and couldn't recover. Senior Sam Schlachter took the loss, working 3 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. Senior Carter Niklason pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run, while senior Travis Hauge pitched a scoreless seventh.

Pumper finished 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs.
