The Prior Lake girls tennis team gave top-ranked Edina a good challenge Sept. 11.

The Hornets prevailed with a 5-2 road win over the No. 5 Lakers, but it was a closer battle than final tally would suggest.

"Edina is good, but we battled," Lakers coach PJ Priest said. "I put [senior] Taylor Jackson and [junior] Charlotte Bowles in doubles at No. 1 and 2 and we pulled those out. We had a really close loss at three doubles and four singles.

"I'm pleased with how the team played," Priest added. "They showed fight and determination against probably the strongest Edina team I have seen."

The Lakers followed the match with a 7-0 home win over Burnsville Sept. 12 to improve to 5-0 in the South Suburban Conference. Prior Lake is back on the court Sept. 15 at home versus Edina in a battle of Section 2AA foes at 4 p.m.

The Lakers (7-2 overall) return to SSC action Sept. 19 at Apple Valley at 3:45 p.m.

Against Edina, Jackson and senior Lindsey Henderson won at No. 1 doubles for Prior Lake (6-1, 4-6, 6-3), while Bowles and junior Elizabeth Dolby won at No. 2 (6-4, 4-6, 13-11).

At No. 3 doubles, seniors Claire Houle and Katie Huntington battled in the second set, before falling (6-2, 7-5). At No. 4 singles, Roess lost two close sets (6-4, 7-6).

Edina has the two highest ranked singles players in the state in the Class 2A — senior Sophia Reddy at No. 1 and sophomore Nicole Copeland at No. 2.

In the win over Burnsville, Prior Lake didn't lost a set. Winning in singles were Jackson at No. 1 (6-1, 6-4), Bowles at No. 2 (6-0, 6-3), junior Katherine Wu at No. 3 (6-0, 6-1) and Roess at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1).

Doubles wins went to: Henderson and sophomore Nic Keller at No. 1 (6-0, 6-1), Dolby and ninth-grader Kelly Wu at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2) and Houle and Huntington at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2).
