Staying in the Title Hunt

The Prior Lake girls swimming team stayed in the hunt for the South Suburban Conference title.

The No. 8-ranked Lakers rolled to a 97-80 home win over Shakopee Oct. 17, improving to 7-1 in league duals with one more to go. That will be at No. 10 Rosemount Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.

A win by the Irish (8-0 in league duals) and it will will the SSC crown with an unbeaten mark. If the Lakers win, they will share the crown with Rosemount and perhaps No. 7 Lakeville North (7-1) if the Panthers beat Eastview on the same day.

The Lakers' lone SSC loss is to Lakeville North back on Sept. 7.

In the win over Shakopee, the Lakers won 11 of 12 events and finished one-two in all three relays.

In the 200 medley relay, eighth-grader Brooke Bauer, ninth-grader Mary O'Neil, junior Skylar Welle and senior Madison Shimek won with a time of 1:56.38, while O'Neil, Welle, ninth-grader Ella Knutson and sophomore Gabrielle Jensen claimed the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.36) and Shimek, Welle, Knutson and junior Olivia Hartell was tops in the 400 freestyle relay (3:50.17).

Individual Prior Lake wins went to O'Neil in the 200 individual medley (2:15.52) and the 100 breaststroke (1:12.44), Shimek in the 100 butterfly (1:03.52) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.90), Welle in the 500 freestyle (5:40.47), eighth-grader Grace Netz in the 200 freestyle (2:08.09), Jensen in the 50 freestyle (26.22), ninth-grader Hanna Maigren in the 100 freestyle (58.46) and ninth-grader Sarah McDonald in diving (150.95).

Runner-up finishes for the Lakers went to: Knutson, Jensen, Hartell and senior Moira Ling in the 200 medley relay (2:00.03), junior Madeline Moen, Maigren, Hartell and Bauer in the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.38), sophomore Jaden Clark, ninth-grader Hannah Quan, Jensen and Maigren (4:00.08) in the 400 freestyle relay, Maigren in the 200 freestyle (2:08.83) and the 100 freestyle (58.46), Clark in the 200 individual medley (2:30.66), Quan in the 50 freestyle (27.64), Moen in the 100 butterfly (1:04.82), Knutson in the 500 freestyle (5:41.59), senior Greta Brua in the 100 backstroke (1:08.17) and ninth-grader Evelyn Collier in diving (122.25).

The Section 2AA meet starts Nov. 8 with the prelims with the finals Nov. 10. Diving is Nov. 9. All three days are at Minnetonka East Middle School.
