Samantha Barrett made her first season on the Prior Lake girls track team a memorable one.

The sophomore came out for track in March and on June 8 she finished the spring as the Class AA state champion in the triple jump. That's quite a quick rise to the top in a such a technical event.

Barrett won the triple jump at Hamline University with a school-record leap of 38-2 1/4. She was seeded No. 3 in the event.

Barrett broke the school record on her first attempt, which matched the mark Rochester Mayo's Annie Wendt hit on her first attempt.

Barrett went 38-1 3/4 on her second attempt to put herself in the lead. When two jumpers are tied, the tiebreaker is their next-best jump.

Barrett was in the lead until Wendt had one more attempt in the sixth round. She went 38-1, giving Barrett the crown by three-fourths of an inch.

Barrett competes in club gymnastics in the winter months. Track seems to suit her fine as well, as she also won the South Suburban Conference title in the triple jump May 23 with a leap of 36-10.

The Lakers ended up 11th in the state team standings with 26 points. Rosemount won the title (71.75), followed by Alexandria (71) and Edina (60).

Barrett was one of four individuals for Prior Lake on the state medal stand (top nine), including junior Taynian Walgrave in the 100 hurdles, ninth-grader Jillian Hiveley in the 300 hurdles and junior Mariana Lehrer in the triple jump.

Prior Lake's 4x200 relay team of Walgrave, Hiveley and juniors Kristin Kay and Aaliyh Guy was also on the medal stand, finishing fourth with a time of 1:42.51. They were only 0.43 out of first place, 0.14 from second and 0.08 from third.

Walgrave ended up fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.80. Hiveley was eighth in the 300 hurdles (45.01), while Lehrer was ninth in the triple jump (35-10 3/4).

The Lakers' 4x100 relay team of Walgrave, Guy, sophomore Emma Bachinski and ninth-grader Ashlyn Jore ended up 12th with a time of 49.54 in the prelims June 7.

Guy also competed in the 200, taking 13th in the prelims (26.24), while senior Jessica Lilland was 13th in the pole vault (10-06).

Rosemount was the only South Suburban Conference in the top 10 in the team standings.

Other finishes from SSC schools included: Farmington (12th, 24 points), Lakeville North (T23rd, 13) and Eagan (T25th, 12) and Burnsville (T38th, 6).
