The Prior Lake wrestling team held its own in a tough field at the Rogers Holiday Matness Invitational Dec. 28-29.

Led by ninth-grader Liam Collins and junior Brock Zurn, the Lakers were sixth out of 32 schools in the team standings with 120.5 points. Collins and Zurn both won individual titles and 107 and 215 pounds, respectively.

St. Michael-Alberville, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 3A, won the team title with 254 points. Scott West, ranked No. 8 in Class 2A, was a distant second (154), followed by Dover-Eyota in third place (134).

Becker, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A, ended up fourth (131), while Foley finished fifth (130.5).

Overall, Prior Lake had seven wrestlers on the medal stand. Ninth-grader Rocco Mikolyzk also wrestled at 107 for the Lakers and ended up eighth. Senior Finn Bloomqust took fourth at 133, while senior Jaxon Mikolyzk was eighth at 145.

Junior John Graham and senior Clint White were both fifth at 152 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.

For Collins, he won all four of his matches, including one by fall. He earned a 6-2 decision in the title match over Eli Schultz of St. Michael-Albertville.

Zurn won three of his first four matches by fall, before earning a 3-1 decision in his title match over Tristan Holbrook of Scott West, ranked No. 6 in Class 2A at that weight.

Prior Lake has three ranked wrestlers in the latest individual rankings by The Guillotine — Collins (No. 3, 107), Bloomquist (No. 9, 139) and Zurn (No. 9, 215).

Bloomquist won three of his five matches at the invite, while White won five of seven and Graham won four of six.

In Section 2AAA, there’s only one ranked team in the field, No. 11 Apple Valley, the defending champion.

This Section 2AAA team tournament is not far off; it’s set for Feb. 16 in Farmington. Other teams in the field include New Prague, Farmington, Eastview, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, Burnsville and Rosemount.

The individual section competition will be Feb. 24 in Prior Lake. The top two individual wresters from each of the 13 weight classes make the state field.

This year’s Class 3A state team tournament is scheduled for Feb. 29, while the individual competition is March 1-2. All three days are at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Sixth-ranked Hastings is the defending team champion, beating St. Michael-Albertville 33-32 in last year’s title match.

The last time Prior Lake made state as a team was in 2015, which was the seventh appearance for the program. The Lakers won the Section 2AAA title five straight years from 2011 to 2015 and was the state runner-up in 2014.
